A gorilla permit is the single line item that shapes a Uganda itinerary. Understanding it saves money, disappointment and a lot of confusion.
How much does a permit cost?
A standard gorilla trekking permit in Bwindi or Mgahinga costs USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, and USD 700 during the low season months of April, May and November. East African citizens pay significantly less. The habituation experience, which gives you four hours with a family instead of one, costs USD 1,500.
Why so expensive?
Because it works. Permit revenue funds rangers, veterinary intervention and — crucially — revenue sharing with the parishes around the park. Mountain gorilla numbers have risen from an estimated 254 in 1981 to more than 1,000 today, the only great ape whose population is growing.
How far ahead should I book?
For June to September travel, book eight to twelve months out. For the shoulder seasons, three to six months is usually enough. We hold provisional permits for confirmed clients at no extra cost.
