Lake Bunyonyi lies 1,962 metres above sea level between Kabale and Kisoro, with 29 islands scattered across water that is up to 900 metres deep in places. It is one of the few bilharzia-free lakes in Uganda, which means swimming is safe.
Paddle a dugout canoe to Punishment Island, hike the terraced hillsides with a local guide, or simply sit on a balcony with a book — Bunyonyi is where most gorilla trekkers go to recover afterwards.
