Birding Uganda: 1,060 Species and Counting

Uganda is Africa’s birding heavyweight: over 10% of all bird species on earth, in a country smaller than Britain.

The big six

Shoebill (Mabamba Swamp), African Green Broadbill (Bwindi), Rwenzori Turaco (Rwenzori), Great Blue Turaco (Kibale), Standard-winged Nightjar, and the tiny, brilliant Albertine Rift endemics — 40 of which live nowhere else on earth.

Where to go

Kibale and Bwindi for the forest birds, Queen Elizabeth’s Kazinga Channel for the waterbirds, Mabamba for the shoebill. Our birding safaris are led by guides who can identify more than 400 species by call alone.

Ask us for the full birding checklist before you travel — we will tailor the itinerary to the species on your list.
